The Georgian town of Stamford was described by Sir Walter Scott as 'the finest scene between London and Edinburgh'. The town has over 600 listed buildings and is edged by the impressive estate of the Elizabethan mansion, Burghley House.
The ancient almshouses on Broad Street, now Brownes Hospital museum, were founded in 1842. Gallows still stretch across the High Street St. Martins as a more sinister reminder of the town's past. The imposing 13th century Church of Al Saints is one of five historic churches within the town centre. Peaceful parkland beside the River Welland contrasts with busy street markets on Friday and Saturday in the town centre, fortnightly Farmers Markets, as well as quality shops, antique centres, inns and restaurants. Stamford Arts Centre, built in 1766 and one of the oldest provincial theatres in England, is now a thriving focal point for arts events and also houses a cinema and the Tourist Information Centre.
We were able to rest wonderfulley at Gwynne House. The room was cozy, the bed very comfy and clean and the view from our window into the beautiful yard was very relaxing. The next morning, our lovely host Galina served us a hearty breakfast. It was a nice mini-vacation in Stamford.
We've just returned from a lovely weekend at Gwynne House. Galina is a very friendly and helpful host, who is always on hand to offer advice/recommendations about the local area, and the Garden room we stayed in was very comfortable. We're looking forward to our next stay!
We had the garden room and it was superb. Lovely room with doors onto a beautifully secluded garden. Good facilities. The shower room was just across the hall and was ours and not shared. Excellent breakfasts and Galina is a superb hostess. Very pleasant and helpful but not pushy. Would definitely return and also recommend it.
